Punjabi Family Titles — ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ

One of the most striking differences between Punjabi and English is how family is described. English uses the same word — "uncle" — for four completely different relationships. Punjabi has a specific word for each one, and using the wrong title can cause real confusion (or gentle correction from your relatives).

Why this matters for diaspora families: If you grow up in an English-speaking household, it's easy to just call everyone "uncle" or "aunty." But when you visit Punjab or talk with older relatives, they'll use precise terms — and knowing them shows respect and cultural connection. This page covers all of them.

Parents & Grandparents — ਮਾਪੇ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਦਾ-ਦਾਦੀ

The full "uncle" picture: In English you'd call all four of these people "uncle" —
  • ਤਾਇਆ — father's older brother
  • ਚਾਚਾ — father's younger brother
  • ਮਾਮਾ — mother's brother
  • ਫੁੱਫੜ — father's sister's husband
  • ਮਾਸੜ — mother's sister's husband
Each word tells you exactly how the person is related — which side of the family, and the connection type.

Cousins — ਚਚੇਰੇ ਭੈਣ-ਭਰਾ

Punjabi has different words for cousins depending on which relative they come from. In traditional Punjabi culture, paternal cousins (ਚਚੇਰੇ) are treated more like siblings than maternal cousins.

💡 Adding ਜੀ (ji) to any title adds respect and formality — it's similar to saying "ji" in the way South Asian cultures use it as a term of respect. You'll hear it constantly: ਮਾਮਾ ਜੀ, ਚਾਚਾ ਜੀ, ਦਾਦੀ ਜੀ. Always use it with elders.
