Punjabi Learning Resources

Dictionaries, books, keyboard setup guides, Gurmukhi fonts, and honest app reviews — everything you need to support your Punjabi learning beyond the DoZubaan lessons.

Finding the Right Punjabi Resources

The Punjabi learning resource landscape has improved enormously in recent years, but it remains patchy compared to major world languages like French, Spanish, or Mandarin. Finding high-quality Gurmukhi-script resources (as opposed to romanisation-only materials) can be challenging, and much of what exists online is either aimed at learners of Hindi (different language, different script) or so advanced as to be inaccessible to beginners and heritage speakers rebuilding their skills.

DoZubaan has curated these resources specifically for Australian Punjabi learners — prioritising materials in Gurmukhi script, materials relevant to the Sikh-heritage diaspora experience in Australia, and materials that are actually accessible rather than requiring existing fluency to use. Where there are significant gaps in available resources (and there are several), we say so plainly rather than recommending inadequate alternatives.

Music and Entertainment

Punjabi music is one of the most accessible entry points into the language, particularly for younger learners. The global success of Punjabi pop and bhangra music means high-quality Punjabi audio is widely available on all streaming platforms. A few recommendations for language learners: look for older classic Punjabi folk songs (lok geet) which use more traditional vocabulary, Gurbani Kirtan for exposure to classical Gurmukhi text, and contemporary artists like Satinder Sartaaj who bridge traditional and modern Punjabi styles with relatively clear diction.

Gurbani and Religious Texts

For Sikh learners and heritage speakers, Gurbani is simultaneously the most challenging and most valuable Punjabi reading material available. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is written entirely in Gurmukhi and represents the highest level of classical Punjabi and related languages. Many Australian Punjabi families have a Gutka Sahib (printed selections of Gurbani) at home — even attempting to read along with Kirtan using the Gutka, even without understanding every word, is excellent Gurmukhi reading practice. Apps like iGurbani and Gurbani Now have searchable Gurbani text with romanisation and translation.

Gurmukhi on Your Computer and Phone

One of the most practical steps any Punjabi learner can take is setting up Gurmukhi input on their devices so they can type in Punjabi naturally rather than relying on romanisation or copy-pasting from an online keyboard. See our Keyboard Setup Guide for detailed instructions for each platform.

Once you have Gurmukhi input set up, you'll find you use it constantly — in WhatsApp messages to Punjabi-speaking family, in social media posts, in school assignments, and in practice writing for VCE or NAATI study. The act of typing in Gurmukhi is itself a powerful learning exercise because it forces you to think about how words are spelled in the script, not just how they sound.
